Environmental Achievements
- 82% of Cibus’s property area is leased to anchor tenants with stated ambitions to reduce the overall climate footprint or to achieve climate neutrality by 2030. Several have set climate goals compatible with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C goal.
- By the end of Q1 2023, tenants had invested in solar panels on the roofs of 42 properties in Finland. Cibus also installed solar panels at one property and is planning additional installations.
- At the end of Q1 2023, a total of 43 properties had solar panels, generating electricity equivalent to the consumption of about 2,503 apartments or driving more than 25 million kilometers in an electric car. Annual CO2 reduction is about 660 tCO2.
- LED lighting replacement in several properties in Sweden and Finland, resulting in major energy savings.
- Transitioning to green district heating where available and analyzing alternative heating methods (geothermal, heat recovery).
Social Achievements
- Cibus offers accessible marketplaces and maintains an ongoing dialogue with anchor tenants about improving people’s security and needs (transport, services).
Governance Achievements
- Established a Code of Conduct and Sustainability Policy based on the UN Global Compact’s ten principles.
- Maintains a whistle-blower function since 2019.
- Reports on sustainability through EPRA sBPR.
Climate Goals & Targets
Long-term Goals:
- Become climate neutral by 2030.
Medium-term Goals:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions per square meter (kg CO2e/m2) by 65% from a 2022 base year by the end of 2030.
Short-term Goals:
- Approval of near-term GHG emission reduction targets (SBTs) by 30 June 2024 (SBTi validation).
Environmental Challenges
- Main greenhouse gas emissions occur in Scope 3 (tenant-controlled heating and electricity consumption where Cibus lacks operational control).
Mitigation Strategies
- Facilitating tenants’ investments in renewable energy and making own investments in green energy sources.
- Setting ambitious targets to substantially reduce the climate footprint.
- Engaging with tenants to encourage their adoption of renewable energy.
