Climate Impact & Sustainability Data (October 2022)
Reporting Period: October 2022
Environmental Metrics
ESG Focus Areas
- Greenhouse gas emissions reduction
- Clean energy transition
- Hydrogen as a fuel source
Environmental Achievements
- Completed a green hydrogen production and pipeline injection project in Howell, New Jersey, displacing a limited percentage of natural gas in the gas distribution network.
Climate Goals & Targets
Environmental Challenges
- Hydrogen in natural gas feed to LNG peak shaving facilities affects the liquefaction process, potentially limiting production availability.
- Inability to fully condense hydrogen-natural gas mixtures in existing liquefiers due to two-phase conditions.
- High hydrogen content in boil-off gas (BOG) may cause problems with BOG equipment.
- Hydrogen may cause hydrogen embrittlement or stress corrosion issues in compressor and downstream equipment.
Mitigation Strategies
- Avoid hydrogen in feed gas to peak shaving facilities by strategic injection point location.
- Install a separation process (e.g., membrane separation) before liquefaction to remove hydrogen.
- Design new facilities with hydrogen separation within the LNG liquefaction process.
- Handle extracted hydrogen by venting, flaring, compression, liquefaction, or resale.
- Review and modify BOG compressor oil and shaft seals for hydrogen compatibility.
- Review material specifications for hydrogen compatibility.
