Environmental Achievements

  • Improved average CO2/RTK efficiency by 1.4 percent during 2015-2016 compared to 2014-2015.
  • Hamad International Airport improved the average efficiency of CO2 per passenger by 4.0 percent and per aircraft movement by 1.2 percent during 2015 compared to 2014.
  • Recycling rates at Hamad International Airport increased, with an average of 35 percent of non-hazardous waste recycled since November 2015.
  • Established recycling contracts to generate revenue from the sale of recyclable materials including cardboard, used cooking oil, paper, plastic and foils.
  • 70 percent of wastewater used in aircraft washing at Qatar Airways Technical Hangar reused (30 percent lost due to evaporation).
  • 100 percent of Qatar Airways aircraft met Chapter 4 noise requirements, while eight percent met Chapter 14 requirements.

Social Achievements

  • Partnered with Qatar’s charity RAF to donate discontinued food items to local Doha food distribution charities (171,090 items since February 2016).
  • Donated almost 600 items of IT equipment for reuse and a further 300 for spare parts.

Governance Achievements

  • Introduced a group-wide environmental governance framework.
  • Launched a program to attain full certification to IEnvA (International Air Transport Association’s Environmental Assessment scheme) by December 2017.
  • Hamad International Airport attained the Mapping level of the Airports Council International Airport Carbon Accreditation program.

Climate Goals & Targets

Environmental Challenges

  • Rapidly growing business leading to increased total CO2 emissions.
  • Managing waste generation across various business units.
  • Conserving water in a region with low rainfall.
  • Addressing noise pollution from airport operations.
  • Preventing pollution to land and water.
Mitigation Strategies
  • Investing in efficient aircraft and fuel optimization.
  • Implementing waste management hierarchy (prevent, reuse, recycle, recover, dispose).
  • Optimizing water demand through technology and operational practices.
  • Adhering to noise regulations and operational procedures.
  • Adopting effective controls to prevent contamination of water and land.

Supply Chain Management

Responsible Procurement
  • Sourcing local, regional, and low-carbon products and materials; using recycled materials; adopting durable materials.
