- Over 40 percent of the food produced or imported for domestic consumption in the United States is lost, with over one-fourth of household food purchases going to waste. Food waste impacts the environment through carbon-intensive production processes and its decomposition in landfills, which releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Additionally, by one estimate, food waste accounts for more than a quarter of total freshwater use.
