Environmental Achievements

  • Launched Kura Waiti Kura Waita River to Moana schools programme, involving seven kura in the WRC region, to advance mātauranga Māori in climate change.
  • Implemented a five-year programme of investment to improve wai and whenua.
  • Developed and operationalised Iwi Environmental Standards consistent with Tai Tumu, Tai Pari, Tai Ao. All tribal lands assessed against the standard.

Social Achievements

  • Secured a $32m commitment from Oranga Tamariki to resource our Mokopuna Ora programme over the next five years.
  • Commitment from Kaainga Ora and the Māori Housing Unit to work directly with us to provide more affordable housing options.
  • Ran Mahinga Kai Waananga, upskilling 12 tribal members on efficient and safe meat processing and handling practices.
  • Completed two work-ready programmes in partnership with BCITO and Fulton Hogan Infrastructure Skills Centre, providing pathways, employment, and apprenticeships.

Governance Achievements

  • Kicking off a Governance review process supported by Te Whakakitenga.
  • Signed two significant milestones with the Crown: Koiora Accord and a commitment for Mokopuna Ora.

  • Resource Management Act (RMA) reform process, potential to unwind key commitments in Treaty settlement legislation.
  • Increasing costs of living, particularly food prices, disproportionately affecting tribal members.

  • Signalled preparedness to litigate to ensure position is recognised in any legislative shift regarding RMA.
  • Developing a business case to grow our own kai, achieve food sovereignty and security, and reduce food costs.
