Waste Generated:537,342 tonnes (estimated for first 3 years of operation)
ESG Focus Areas
- Environmental
Environmental Achievements
- Developed a plan for subaqueous deposition of most waste rock and tailings material to minimize sulphide weathering and reduce potential acid generation.
Climate Goals & Targets
Environmental Challenges
- Potential for acid rock drainage (ARD) and metal leaching from sulphide minerals in some rock types at the Aappaluttoq Ruby Project site.
Mitigation Strategies
- Subaqueous deposition of potentially acid-generating (PAG) materials to limit exposure to oxygen and minimize sulphide oxidation.
- Field screening protocol to identify and manage materials containing >0.3% sulphide (0.1% for gneiss) by subaqueous disposal.
- Monitoring of open pit water quality during mine operation to determine if mitigating measures are needed.
- Post-closure flooding of the open pit to limit sulphide oxidation.
