Reporting Period: 2023-24

Environmental Metrics

Waste Generated:113.6M tons diverted annually

ESG Focus Areas

  • Sustainability
  • Safety
  • Competitiveness
  • Workforce Development

Environmental Achievements

  • Diverted roughly 113.6M tons of materials from landfills annually, avoiding approximately 61.3MMT of carbon dioxide & 7.4MMT of methane emissions.
  • Advocated for the EMIT LESS Act to expand research on enteric methane emissions and provide cost-share dollars to farmers to deploy emissions-reducing practices.
  • Collaborated with the Global Feed LCA Institute (GFLI) to establish a globally accepted framework for calculating the LCA for animal feed.

Social Achievements

  • Supported the DRIVE Safe Integrity Act to add qualified truck drivers on U.S. highways.
  • Modernized pet food labels to improve pet owners’ understanding of product information.
  • Provided expert guidance to member companies on FDA Form 483 responses and regulatory compliance.
  • Offered the annual Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance Preventive Controls for Animal Food training course.

Governance Achievements

  • Successfully advocated for the introduction of the Innovative FEED Act in Congress and encouraged the Food and Drug Administration to rescind its outdated policy guide.
  • Defeated several state bills proposing the misuse and diversion of fees collected from commercial animal food manufacturers.
  • Supported legislation extending the existing commercial feed inspection fee and closing a loophole permitting hemp product use in animal food before federal safety reviews.

Climate Goals & Targets

Environmental Challenges

  • Supply chain disruptions (Mississippi River drought, rail border crossing labor issues, bridge collapse).
  • Overreliance on single or few suppliers for critical inputs (vitamins and amino acids).
  • Stagnant MAP funding limiting international impact.
  • Regulatory scrutiny of formaldehyde use.
  • Potential U.S. outbreak of African swine fever (ASF).
  • Spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in dairy cows.
Mitigation Strategies
  • Formed a supply chain resiliency task force to diversify and de-risk the vitamin and amino acid supply chain.
  • Advocated for the Securing American Agriculture Act to bolster agricultural supply chains.
  • Urged Congress to pass a farm bill with increased MAP funding.
  • Pushed back against the EPA’s review of formaldehyde and urged meaningful discussions with the FDA and USDA.
  • Provided input to the USDA’s ASF response plans and on safe feed distribution.
  • Reinforced strong biosecurity practices with members and relayed scientific information on the safety of milk-based animal feed ingredients.
  • Refuted articles alleging that the use of poultry litter in dairy cattle diets spread HPAI.

Supply Chain Management

Responsible Procurement
  • Strategies to diversify and de-risk the vitamin and amino acid supply chain

Climate-Related Risks & Opportunities

Opportunities
  • Opportunities for the feed industry to offer solutions to meet animal agriculture’s climate goals through responsible sourcing, regenerative agriculture, ingredient circularity and ration innovation.
