Climate Goals & Targets

Environmental Challenges

  • All policies and procedures need to reflect the transition into on-site development and be visibly impactful ahead of construction.
  • Future recruitment of corporate and operations personnel needs to reflect greater diversity and ESG experience.
  • Key performance targets need to reflect the company’s transition to construction and operations.
  • A formal complaints and grievances process needs to be established.
  • Ahead of Maniry construction, emergency planning for health and safety incidents needs to be incorporated into Project planning.
  • Presence of local communities, land ownership and impact on subsistence farming, local roads and access to water.
  • Future employment plans and numbers need to take into consideration the impact on local villages.
  • Given the harsh environment and sparsely populated nature of the area, a biodiversity management plan will be required.
Mitigation Strategies
  • A full review of policies and procedures will be undertaken to reflect this transition and will incorporate aspects of Malagasy culture.
  • Recruitment to reflect greater representation from vulnerable and or underrepresented stakeholder groups; those with ESG related experience will be actively sought.
  • Senior management is currently reviewing key performance targets and plans to finalise these prior to the finalisation of Maniry Project financing.
  • This has been incorporated as part of the formal RAP discussion process which commenced recently.
  • Updated emergency plans for health and safety incidents will be completed prior to the completion of Maniry Project financing.
  • In consultation with local stakeholders, robust assessments, plans, monitoring activities, ongoing actions and controls will be planned and implemented utilising qualified service providers; RAP and hydrology specialists have already been engaged.
  • Plans are in place to have the Maniry workforce reside in nearby Ampanihy to minimise any significant influx of people to the area. In addition to this HR plans are being developed to prioritise job opportunities for people in the region and to ensure compliance with the Malagasy Labour Code.
  • A biodiversity management plan will be established in the near future, once permits / licenses have been finalised.
