Environmental Challenges

  • Gabon's heavy reliance on oil, resulting in a marginal agricultural sector and food insecurity.
  • Low population density, ageing and unskilled rural workforce, and traditional non-intensive production systems.
  • Unfavorable economic environment with high transportation costs and lack of decentralized trading facilities.
  • Weak organization of producers, poorly organized agricultural research, and weak institutional capacity.
Mitigation Strategies
  • Implementation of the Emerging Gabon Strategic Plan 2025 (PSGE) to diversify the economy and transform the agricultural sector.
  • Development of the GRAINE Programme to promote agricultural cooperatives and youth entrepreneurship.
  • Establishment of a Study Coordination Unit to strengthen institutional capacity and improve project management.
  • Investment in infrastructure (roads, markets, warehouses) and capacity building to improve value chains.
