ESG Focus Areas
- Mine Closure and Sustainability
- Environmental Assessment
- Human Resource Element and Manpower
- Community Relations
Environmental Achievements
- Developed a Tailings Management Facility (TMF) and Water Storage Dam (WSD) design that accommodates appropriate statutory requirements for the Central African Republic, recommendations from the EU Waste Management Directive, Best Available Techniques (BAT) for the management of tailings, the Equator Principles, and operator requirements with respect to the safe, efficient and environmentally acceptable storage of the mine waste products.
Social Achievements
- Developed a Human Resource Element policy focused on attracting, developing, motivating, and retaining the best people while pursuing localization. Included policies on recruitment, remuneration, housing, industrial relations, safety and health, emergency response, HIV/AIDS, training and development, community relations, and security.
- Established a Community Consultative Committee (CCC) to foster community involvement and participation.

Climate Goals & Targets
Long-term Goals:
- Not disclosed
Medium-term Goals:
- Completion of processing facility ramp-up to 100% in Dec 2013.
Short-term Goals:
- Commencement of detailed engineering, procurement and contracts administration in June 2011.
- First ore production in June 2013.
Environmental Challenges
- Relatively poorly developed infrastructure in the project area.
- Potential for supply chain disruptions due to logistical challenges in the Central African Republic.
- High variability in ore characteristics, potentially impacting comminution and processing.
- Potential for acid generation from sulphide tailings.
- Risk of high viscosity in soft oxide ores impacting processing.
- Limited availability of skilled labor in the region.
Mitigation Strategies
- Upgrading off-site infrastructure (roads, bridges) to improve logistics.
- Developing contingency plans for fuel supply disruptions (using diesel as an alternative to HFO).
- Designing a flexible comminution circuit to handle variable ore characteristics.
- Implementing tailings management strategies to mitigate acid generation (encapsulation of sulphide tailings with oxide tailings).
- Using viscosity modifiers or adjusting the SAG mill operation to address high viscosity issues.
- Implementing a comprehensive training program to develop local skills and replace expatriate labor.
