Environmental Achievements
- Met targets in relation to environmental management, CO2 emissions, emissions to air and water, waste, and waste materials as an alternative source of energy. Reduced the embodied carbon dioxide of concrete by 23% from 1990 baseline (standardized mix). In 2012, used 62 times more recovered and waste material than waste sent to landfill.
- 89.8% of concrete and 89.3% of concrete + reinforcement sites certified to ISO 14001 in 2012 (exceeding the 85% target).
Social Achievements
- Progress on health and safety is on track for the 2014 target. Reportable injuries reduced by 39% from 2008 levels in 2012. Lost Time Injuries (LTI) reduced by around 30% since 2010.
- 90% of concrete and 91% of concrete + reinforcement employees covered by certified training and evaluation processes in 2012.
Governance Achievements
- 91.2% of production sites covered by a certified ISO 9001 QMS in 2012 (achieving the 90% target).
- Zero convictions for air and water emissions in 2012.
Climate Goals & Targets
Long-term Goals:
- Contribute to the delivery of a low carbon built environment (aligned with GCB targets).
Medium-term Goals:
- Reduce kg CO2/tonne of concrete by 30% from a 1990 baseline by 2020.
- Reduce waste to landfill to less than 0.5kg per tonne of concrete produced by 2020.
- Achieve 95% certification to BES 6001 by 2020.
- Achieve 50% of total energy use from waste-derived fuel by 2020.
- Achieve 35% additional cementitious materials by 2020.
- 100% of relevant sites to have Community Liaison Programmes by 2020.
Short-term Goals:
- Develop a water strategy to support measurement and reporting of sustainability performance and target setting by 2015.
Environmental Challenges
- Did not reach targets in all areas, including additional cementitious materials, employment and skills, biodiversity plans, and local community engagement.
- Balancing environmental, social, and economic concerns against difficult economic conditions.
- Changes in the type of concrete being supplied counteracted some efforts to reduce CO2 emissions.
- Data collection challenges related to water consumption and biodiversity.
Mitigation Strategies
- Continued work towards targets set for 2020 and beyond.
- Launched Resource Efficiency Action Plans (REAPs) in partnership with WRAP.
- Reviewing indicator definitions to ensure data collection consistency.
- Developing a more comprehensive water strategy and additional biodiversity indicators.
