Reporting Period: 2023

Environmental Metrics

Total Carbon Emissions:1104.0 tCO2e (Scope 1 and 2, market-based)
Scope 1 Emissions:884.6 tCO2e
Scope 2 Emissions:28.0 tCO2e (market-based), 326.1 tCO2e (location-based)

ESG Focus Areas

  • Governance
  • Value Chain
  • Employees
  • Environment
  • Social Responsibility

Environmental Achievements

  • Reduced total emissions by more than 20 percent by purchasing 100 percent green electricity at its sites. Saved almost 300 tonnes of greenhouse gases compared to the average German electricity consumption.
  • Increased the nominal output of its own wind farms to 369.8 MW (previous year: 318.9 MW) by completing and taking over further wind farms. Generated 695 GWh in 2023 (previous year: 509 GWh), avoiding approximately 523,000 tons of CO2e emissions.
  • Around 45 percent of the vehicles registered in Germany in the reporting year were electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids.

Social Achievements

  • Increased total number of employees by 16% from 542 to 629.
  • Introduced a management system according to DIN EN 45001 for occupational health and safety, with certification planned for 2024.
  • Implemented measures to expand employer branding and successfully hire new employees, including offering bicycle leasing, financial support for fitness offerings, and organizing health days.

Governance Achievements

  • Introduced the PNE ESG Committee, which meets regularly to manage and coordinate sustainability-relevant topics.
  • Revised the Code of Conduct and competency regulations in 2023.
  • Implemented an internal whistleblower system compliant with the Whistleblower Protection Act.

Climate Goals & Targets

Medium-term Goals:
  • Expand its position as an independent power producer and operate its own portfolio of wind farms and photovoltaic systems of at least 1,500 MW/MWp by the end of 2027.
Short-term Goals:
  • By 2025, at least 16 percent of the first management level positions should be held by women. At second management level below the Board of Management, this proportion should be at least 30 percent by 2025.

Environmental Challenges

  • Cybercrime prevention
  • Anti-corruption prevention
  • Business partner review
  • Recycling of rotor blades in a circular economy
Mitigation Strategies
  • Information in the PNE app and emails to raise awareness of cybercrime.
  • Setting up an information security management system according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 27001:2022.
  • Adjusting several processes to mitigate anti-corruption risks, including mandatory involvement of the Compliance department before donations.
  • Developing a Supplier Code of Conduct.
  • Working with manufacturers to develop rotor blades that can be broken down into their individual components and processes for utilizing the rotor blade material.

Supply Chain Management

Supplier Audits: Three-step process: risk classification, pre-audit and integrity review, and compliance measures.

Responsible Procurement
  • Strict environmental and social criteria for supplier selection and evaluation.
  • Preference for suppliers certified to ISO 14001.
  • Cooperation with regional material suppliers and construction companies to reduce transport routes and CO2 emissions.

Climate-Related Risks & Opportunities
