ESG Focus Areas
- Environmental
- Social
- Governance
- Human Rights
- Responsible Sourcing
Environmental Achievements
- Developed a sophisticated Integrated Waste Landform approach to bulk waste management that will minimize acid formation and create a long-term stable landform constructed via progressive rehabilitation.
- Project footprint avoidance areas that kept intact approximately 107ha of land near creek lines. This has flood mitigation benefits as well as avoiding direct impacts on numerous Aboriginal cultural heritage objects, riparian vegetation, and several small patches of Purple Wood Wattle (threatened species).
- Opportunities for heat recovery and adoption of renewable energy. Further, kiln heating for the processing plant is via electrical power thereby providing the opportunity for greenhouse gas emission reduction where renewable power can be utilized
Social Achievements
- Consultation with and compensation for financial losses with landholder (Western Lands Leaseholder).
- Commitment to employing local people where possible.
- Commitment to develop Aboriginal Employment Strategy with relevant stakeholders.
- Comprehensive stakeholder engagement underway inclusive of neighbours, workforce, local and state government.
Governance Achievements
- Cobalt Blue is governed by an independent Board of Directors.
- Strong governance and assurance processes that rely on general risk management, annual reviews, and an Audit & Risk Committee.
Climate Goals & Targets
Long-term Goals:
- Achieving carbon neutrality by 2040
Medium-term Goals:
- Not disclosed
Short-term Goals:
- Not disclosed
Environmental Challenges
- Current battery minerals pricing, particularly cobalt metal trading at US$12–14/lb, as well as the current inflated capital cost environment, make the Broken Hill Cobalt Project (BHCP) in its current form unlikely to attract project financing.
- High level of concentration in global cobalt extraction and processing, posing risks to supply chains.
Mitigation Strategies
- Cobalt Blue is developing a cobalt sulphate refinery in Western Australia which aims to commence production in 2026 to supply IRA compliant material to the Allied supply chain.
- Cobalt Blue may assess the viability of a smaller Broken Hill Cobalt Project.
- Overseas sourcing of cobalt intermediate will only be undertaken where suppliers can demonstrate, using reputable means, that conformance to well-established ESG standards is occurring.
